… including bath towels, hand towels, fingertip towels, and wash cloths

If your linen closet is overflowing with towels, you probably have way too many for what you realistically need. Here are guidelines for how many you realistically need to keep and how to organize and store your towels for your household as well as guests. And, did you know, you can also organize your spaces according to your organizing style? You can find out what your organizing style is here.

Before organizing your towels, you must purge the ones that are damaged beyond repair and the ones you no longer use. Be ruthless and purge the excess so you can more easily store what you do need and use.

In my freebie library here, I include guides which help walk you through the organizing process and help you decide what to purge and keep. How Many Towels Do You Really Need?

We each need one bath towel we are using and one available to use when we it’s time to wash the one we are using. The same goes for hand towels and fingertips towels. The number of washcloths you need depends on many washcloths you use throughout the week. You may use one for your face and one for your body and change each out every few days, for example. Double that amount and you should be set between laundry days. Here is a little guide to break things down regarding the quantities that make sense to keep:

  • 2 bath towels per person
  • 2 hand towels and/or fingertip towels per bathroom
  • 6 to 14 washcloths per person depending on how many are used each week (double the amount you use in one week)

Here are ideas on how to organize and store your towels whether you like them to be tucked away or visible. Wherever you store them, here is how to make them easily accessible as well.

Closed Storage

The linen closet is an ovious and great place to store your towels. If you have a storage closet in your bathroom(s), that is even better. If you have the space in your bathroom vanity, that is another excellent space to take advantage of. Here are organizing ideas and solutions to help keep everything beautifully contained and accessible.

Closet shelf dividers are super helpful for keeping stacks of folded items from toppling over. There are versions created for wire shelving, if that is what you have in your linen closet. This type fits over standard wood shelves (found here):

To store your hand towels, smaller fingertip towels, and washcloths, you can roll them up and store them in this drawer system on a linen closet shelf and even under your bathroom sink (found here):

These bins below accomplish the same task as closet shelf dividers. The lip at the front helps to contain any towels or washcloths you may prefer to roll and stand upright (found here):

I share how to use a hanging sweater organizer and hanging shoe organizer for guest room storage. For guests, you can also store towels long term in these bins with lids whether you store them in the linen closet or guest room (found here):

Open Storage

One of the most space-saving things you can do in almost any space is to utilize wall space. Of course I alwasy opt for making it pretty too. Here are some aesthetically-pleasing wall organizers for your towels.

Using something like this is great for storing both bath towels and hand towels. Remember, these are meant to store spare towels. These aren’t meant to hold the towels you are currently using. Obviously, you want your towel to dry between uses. So, you will store the towel you are currently using in the usual place on a towel bar or hook. Then, you can have your spare towels available to grab from here (found here):

For quick and easy access to washcloths, you can roll them up and store them in something like this (found here):

Then, you can hang the washcloth to try on the hook. So convenient!

I hope you found some ideas for how to organize your towels for your organizing style and/or the space that you have! In my next post, I share how to organize bedding.
