Here are six weekly tasks you must include in your weekly cleaning routine. This is the second part of my series about 35 cleaning tasks you must do around your home throughout the year.

For each of the tasks below, you can choose one day a week to do each task or do them all in one day a week. I demonstrate how to schedule these tasks in a video here.

Weekly Cleaning Routine Task #1

Dust Furniture & Polish Glass & Mirrors

If you’re an allergy-sufferer like me, dust is your nemesis. My favorite way to keep dust under control is to use my all-purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth on all surfaces except for electronics, glass, and mirrors. Then, for electronics, glass, and mirrors, I use my homemade glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth made for glass and electronics. I also use car detailing tools to remove dust from any nooks and crannies that are difficult to reach with a microfiber cloth. I share all about my favorite cleaning tools in my ultimate cleaning closet here. All my homemade cleaning product recipes can be downloaded for free here.

Weekly Cleaning Routine Task #2

Sweep, Vacuum, & Mop Floors

As noted in my previous post about five cleaning tasks you must do daily, cleaning your kitchen floor daily is the first key to keeping the rest of your floors clean. Once a week, here is how I clean the rest of my floors:

  • I like to vacuum all my floors including carpet and tile. I know some like to use a broom and dust pan on non-carpeted floors, so you do you.
  • Then, I follow up with my scrub mop, hot water, and a drop of dish soap. I simply saturate my mop with hot water, add a drop of dish soap directly on the sponge head, add more hot water, and wring the mop head with the built-in wringing mechanism. This allows the mop head to be damp but not dripping wet. Also, the mop head will have just enough soap to effectively clean dirt and grime without leaving behind a soapy residue. I repeat saturating and wringing the mop head whenever the mop head needs to be dampened again.
  • Following that, I polish my floors with my microfiber mop with a built-in sprayer which contains my all-purpose cleaning solution with peppermint essential oil (peppermint is great for repelling pests and rodents).

Again, all my favorite cleaning tools are in my ultimate cleaning closet here. If, for any reason, we have extra dusty floors (possibly due to some repairs around the house), after vacuuming, I like to follow-up with a dry microfiber cloth. Then, I continue with mopping and polishing the floors as usual.

Bonus tip: Just before vacuuming, I will go around the floors with an old credit card and scrape up any dirt stuck to the floor (i.e. I have pet birds … enough said).

Weekly Cleaning Routine Task #3

Clean Bathrooms

To clean my bathroom, I start with the shower. I spray it down with my homemade soap scum remover before I shower. I let it sit for 15 minutes. During those 15 minutes, I do the following:

  • I squirt my homemade toilet bowl cleaner under the rim of my toilet.
  • Then, I spray down the mirror with my homemade glass cleaner.
  • I spray down the sink and toilet with my homemade all-purpose cleaner.
  • Then, I go back around to the mirror and wipe it down with my microfiber cloth made for glass.
  • I use paper towels to wipe down the sink and toilet.
  • Then, I scrub the toilet and leave the toilet brush floating above the water in the toilet by placing the toilet seat on the toilet brush handle. This allows the toilet brush to drip dry.
  • I go back around to the sink and toilet and spray it down with my homemade disinfectant.
  • Then, I dust my storage shelves and washing machine with my all-purpose cleaner and a microfiber cloth.
  • If I haven’t cleaned the bathroom floor already when cleaning all the floors around my place, I will do so now by following the method noted in the previous cleaning task section. Before doing so, I will shake out the rug and bamboo mat. Then, I will clean the bamboo mat with my all-purpose cleaner and paper towels. I will also spray the bamboo mat with disinfectant and leave the paper towel roll available for me to grab to wipe down the bamboo mat after I come out of the shower.
  • I will then shower and scrub down the shower with an iron handle brush.
  • Upon coming out of the shower, I will wipe down the bamboo mat, toilet, and sink with paper towels to remove the disinfectant.

Weekly Cleaning Routine Task #4

Sweep & Tidy Outdoor Areas

At least once a week, it’s a good rule of thumb to sweep away debris from your outdoor areas including your porch, walkways, driveway, and backyard seating areas. If you have quite a bit of land, a leaf blower and/or pressure washer might be a good investment for you. Consistently cleaning up around the outside of your home helps you to be aware of any destructive pests, like termites, that might have invaded your fences or house. The earlier you find these pests, the easier it will be to get rid of them.

Weekly Cleaning Routine Task #5

Organize Paperwork

I have a whole series on paperwork organization to help you stay on top of the flow of paperwork coming into your home on a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis in an efficient paperwork maintenance system. Setting aside time, at least, once a week to tidy up paperwork will keep your spaces from overflowing with paper clutter.

Weekly Cleaning Routine Task #6

Do All Laundry

If you don’t do a load of laundry a day as noted in my previous post, you can do all your laundry once a week. An efficiently organized laundry area helps tremendously when tackling large piles of laundry. I share all about how to organize your laundry area here. Bonus tip: on bathroom cleaning day, you can decide if your shower curtain and shower curtain liner need to be washed in the washing machine.

All my homemade cleaning product recipes can be found here and my favorite cleaning tools here.

Remember, you can choose one day a week to do one of these six tasks per day. Or, you can choose one day a week to do all six of these tasks.

I share all 35 cleaning tasks in a video here.
