Here is my small “master bedroom” in my tiny southern California studio apartment. My apartment is a little over 400 square feet, and I sure maximized every inch of this space with lovely furniture and decor on a super small budget! Creating a Master Bedroom in My Small Studio
Honestly, this was the easiest room to create in our tiny studio. I never kept much in my bedroom. All I needed was a nightstand.
Though my small studio living room, office, and dining area have been furnished with secondhand furniture throughout, I purchased this nightstand from Ross Dress for Less. I just could not find the right size and style through Offerup like I did with the rest of my furniture. However, for anyone looking to furnish and decorate their place on a small budget, Ross Dress for Less has always been my go to. This nightstand is made of a sustainable mango wood. That makes me very happy. Since I could not find a second hand piece, in order to reuse or re-purpose something old to keep it out of a landfill, I was glad this piece was made of a sustainable material.
Another piece I needed, in order to create a designated “master bedroom” was some kind of divider between the living room and bedroom area. It would serve three functions: one, to keep my pillows from falling into the TV; two, to keep my TV from falling onto me while in bed; and, three, to distinctly divide the living room from my bedroom. Bonus: it would make things pretty!
This room divider is from Cost Plus World Market and can be found here. I originally had my eye on a rattan room divider that I saw on Offerup. It was $350.00 which, I know, is pretty up there in price. However, it was classic and I figured I would use it forever. It was not in my designated budget though. So, I would not purchase it unless I sold a few pieces of furniture and household items first to cover the cost. Meanwhile, I found the divider pictured here for much less in price. It turns out, the divider I did end up with is much more practical. There would have been too many large gaps in the rattan room divider making it not ideal to hold up my pillows. Also, it would not create a clear enough divided distinction between the living room and bedroom. Needless to say, I am very happy with my purchase … not only because of appearance and functionality, but the price! As I’ve said before and will always say, “I just love a good bargain!”
Creating a Master Closet Where There Was No Closet
Yes, I didn’t have a closet in my small studio master bedroom. There is a clothing closet in our place, but it is in my daughter’s room which I share in the next post. So, I had to figure out how to create a closet … I also wanted to make sure it was aesthetically pleasing.
Again, Offerup had just what I needed! It is a portable closet which you can find at Walmart here. I simply left the cover off and just used the internal structure. I was so grateful the solution was so simple and so budget-friendly! At the bottom of the closet, I repurposed some bins I already had on hand which contain my shoes and purses. For additional storage, I placed my bed on risers. I don’t have a garage or shed here so I needed a place to store my tools and lighting equipment and the area under the bed was the perfect solution. While this post series (my previous post was all about my bathroom and laundry room) is an overall tour of each room/area in my tiny studio, I will eventually go into more detail about the organization of each room/area in detail.
If you have any questions about where I purchased any of the items pictured here, feel free to leave a comment below.
In my next post, I share all about my daughter’s even tinier bedroom. Though it’s small, it packs a big punch with bold colors and decor! The full tour of my tiny studio will be here.
