Clutter can be sneakier than we realize …

You are likely here because you have joined Terry Elisabeth’s 4-week declutter challenge here and you want to prevent clutter from coming back into your home! Here is where we go over how to keep clutter from creeping back into your home.

Maybe you caught a great sale at your favorite shoe store, or the makeup counter is offering a free skincare product if you purchase a certain amount of makeup, or those after holiday candies and decor are on clearance … might as well clear the shelf! Right? Sometimes it makes sense but, most of the time, you don’t really need these items when you think about it.

Why Organizing is a Must to Prevent Clutter

This is exactly why being organized makes all the difference. When we know exactly what we have on hand, it makes it that much easier to know what we really need to purchase. In an organized space, you can see at a glance what you are out of and what you really need. As you go through this declutter challenge, you will realize what items you have that have been collecting dust. And, now, you can be much more mindful of the money wasted on purchases you never needed.

How to Prevent Clutter from Creeping Back into Your Home

Without further ado, here is how to keep the clutter from creeping back into your home:

  1. Keep your spaces organized. Last week, we talked about money-saving organizing habits where I shared three habits for staying organized here.
  2. Keep separate lists of what you “need” and “want”. A simple list of “needs” vs “wants” is key to keeping you accountable to yourself to prioritize purchasing what you need before purchasing what you want.
  3. Donate regularly. Purging your home of outgrown, unused, and damaged items regularly makes you mindful of clutter that eventually exists from items you already have on hand. It also clears space for the items you do need, preventing your spaces from becoming overrun by too much stuff again. Donating outgrown items especially makes you mindful of those who could still make good use of these items. There are so many people who are happy to purchase clothing and toys and household items at a much more discounted price at a thrift store. You can also donate directly to shelters. You can find how to do that here.

Remember, organizing doesn’t have to be expensive in the first place! I share all about that here.
