How to Organize Snacks in the Refrigerator for School or Work Lunches and Hungry Kids at Home

The goal of organizing snacks is to make them easy to grab and go for school and/or work lunches … especially for those rushed mornings or the late nights preparing for tomorrow or for when your hands are full and your little one is whining, I mean asking, for a snack. To help you begin to determine how to organize snacks in the refrigerator, in the previous post, I talked about the importance of meal-planning and creating a master grocery list. Doing these two tasks will help you to stop wasting food and money and help to keep your refrigerator organized from now on.

The best way to organize snacks in the refrigerator is to store them by packaging size and type. For example, some pre-packaged snacks come in cup form like fruit cups and yogurt. Other snacks in cup form include dips like guacamole and hummus but in a much smaller size. Containing snacks by packaging size and type makes them easy to store and grab at a glance. Snacks also come in tubes and pouches. Here is how to organize them most efficiently.

How to Organize Fresh Produce Snacks

I share all about how to properly store and organize produce in the refrigerator here to keep your produce fresher for as long as possible. You can find the perfect solutions to store your whole fruits and veggies there. Some fruits and veggies must be contained in smaller packages that are easy to grab and go especially if they come in bunches like grapes or if they must be chopped up like cucumbers. Using containers like small leakproof food storage containers or reusable silicone bags is ideal for reducing waste. To contain these grab and go snacks, you can use simple bins and baskets. To make snacks you consume at home easy to grab, a divided container like this can be super helpful (found here):

Healthy snacking will be a priority when you already have your produce prepped and ready for snacking in convenient containers!

How to Organize Cup Snacks

For the fresh produce you contain in small leakproof food storage containers, or pre-packaged fruit cups and yogurt cups, you can use containers which are easy to reach into and out of even when stacked on top of each other. When you are trying to quickly grab a snack, you don’t want to have to remove a container to get to another container underneath. Utilizing containers which are open on the sides like these makes snacks easy to access super quickly (found here):

Though this container is meant to have the open side stored facing toward you, in your refrigerator, you will want to store this sideways. As long as you are able to reach your hand in and out to grab what you need, this can be great for maximizing vertical space. For smaller snack containers, like guacamole and hummus, you can utilize more narrow bins of a similar style.

How to Organize Tube Snacks

I share how to best utilize shallow refrigerator drawers below, but did you know you can actually add drawers to your refrigerator? To organize and store yogurt tubes and cheese sticks, you can use simple long bins or baskets. Or, you can install something like this (found here):

If you have a low enough shelf to install these on, the little ones can easily grab a yogurt tube or cheese stick.

How to Organize Snack Pouches

Speaking of little ones, there variety of snack pouches can be stored in these containers (found here):

They are the perfect width, and you can store one flavor in each to make choosing a flavor at a glance super quick. Whatever ones you don’t use for pouches can be used for all kinds of refrigerator food categorizing and organizing.

How to Organize Shallow Refrigerator Drawers for Snacks

Speaking of categorizing, if you have a wide, shallow refrigerator drawer, this is an excellent space to store snacks. It can be easily divided by using the bins above or any kind of drawer dividers like these for the size of items you need to store like those kid-size cheese wheels (found here):
