Today, I feature closet shelf dividers! These organizers are underutilized but can be quite useful! Here I share seven surprising ways to use them to get organized. I am also doing an organized purse giveaway, so stay tuned!
Welcome to the fifth post in my series about how to decide whether or not you need organizing products. Click here if you missed the intro.
You want to wait until the 6th step of organizing before you purchase organizing supplies. I have my free mini 7-step guide here!
Let’s jump into where and how to use closet shelf dividers in your spaces!
ORIGINAL FUNCTION
The purpose of a closet shelf divider is to keep folded clothes from toppling over and to keep purses upright in order to maintain their shape.
WHAT NOT TO DO
They are not meant to hold items that are difficult to fold like delicate scarves. Those do better being stored within a bin or basket on the closet shelf instead.
BEST WAYS TO USE
The best ways to use these organizers is to store folded clothes on the top shelf of your closet. I never used a dresser in the previous places I lived because I was able to store all my clothes including folded clothes, like sweaters and pajamas, in the closet. These are also great for linen closet shelves as they keep towels and sheets upright. They also keep purses upright in order to keep them from forming creases. Don’t forget to stuff your purses while they are stored. You can be resourceful and use grocery bags or newspaper within Ziploc bags or crumpled craft paper.
UNCONVENTIONAL USES
For some unconventional uses, you can keep binders upright on a shelf or within the closet of your office. You can also use them to designate portions of shelves in shared spaces like a bedroom between siblings or in a dorm room. You can label the shelf in between dividers. You can keep each of your kids’ lunch bags in between these dividers in labeled sections within your pantry. You can keep paper gift bags divided by size or other larger craft supplies on your craft room shelves as well.
HOW TO DECIDE IF YOU NEED SHELF DIVIDERS
These are great to consider if you have items that are toppling over on a shelf whether it is your craft room, bedroom, or office, etc. If they are not toppling over, then you don’t need them! Or, if you are a disorganized “Stasher” rather than an organized “Stasher” (click here for my post about the organizing styles), then you will do well to have these anyway and label the items that belong in each section so that you don’t end up just stashing items on the top shelf. They are especially great if you don’t have the space for a dresser or just don’t want to have a dresser in your bedroom. You can store folded clothing on the top shelf of your closet and store undergarments within a small drawer system within your closet. These shelf dividers can help eliminate confusion about whose items belong to whom on shared shelves when they are labeled in between.
HOW TO SAVE MONEY
First, as always, don’t purchase more dividers than you need. Again, you will pare down your items to what you need before you purchase any organizing products. The most affordable option, hands down, are from Big Lots. Walmart and Amazon also have great prices. As usual, The Container Store has the best selection to match the style you may prefer, and the prices are comparable to Walmart and Amazon. I love The Container Store’s acrylic ones with the bonus hook. Here are the links to all of these awesome and affordable options (all are pictured in the video except for the Amazon products which are pictured below):
